Automobiles and Phony Escrow Scams
|
We are often asked, "Should I use an escrow service required
by the seller?" Our Answer:
- Be wary of escrow recommendations or
requirements from sellers.
They may have ulterior motives for steering you to certain fraudulent sites.
Always check the escrow service out yourself.
-
There are reasons why an escrow account might work in your
favor, BUT only if YOU choose the escrow account to act as a buffer in
case goods or services are not received should you trust this approach. Since
an escrow service benefits you, if this approach was suggested by the seller,
we think you should stay clear of any deals where the seller requires
an Internet-based escrow service. With so many car / escrow scams out and
about, we say definitely work alternative arrangements such as one of the
following:
- BEST OPTION unless this is a rare item that can't be
found elsewhere, pay a little more if you must and shop locally.
- find your own escrow service to hold the money on your
behalf for them while waiting for the car to arrive.
- Insist on using a credit card, so you are in control if
goods are not delivered as promised.
- Always verify title history using the
VIN number (try CarFax.com).
This helps but is not a certainty.
- In general, we say shop locally.
